That morning felt colder than usual. I had just stepped outside my office building when I saw an older homeless woman sitting beside the entrance with her hands tucked into her sleeves. She quietly asked for spare change as people walked past pretending not to hear her. I reached into my pocket, but instead of coins I looked at the heavy jacket I was wearing. Without thinking much about it, I took it off and handed it to her because she was shivering badly.

She looked at me silently for several seconds before smiling. Then she reached into her pocket and handed me an old rusty coin covered in scratches. I laughed nervously and told her she should keep it, but she pushed it back into my hand. “Keep this,” she whispered. “You’ll know when to use it.” I thought it was strange, but before I could say anything else, my boss walked outside and saw everything.

By afternoon I was sitting in his office being fired. He claimed I embarrassed the company in front of clients and made a “bad image” for the business. I sat there speechless. Ten minutes later I walked out carrying a small box filled with my things. Over the next two weeks I kept staring at that rusty coin sitting on my kitchen table, wondering why I hadn’t simply given her money instead.

Then one evening I came home and stopped walking. Sitting on my porch was a small black velvet box with no name and no return address. My hands shook while I picked it up.
