The Revenge Coffee She Regretted

That morning, my husband stood in front of the mirror spraying expensive cologne like he was preparing for a first date instead of another “important work meeting.” I watched quietly from the kitchen while coffee dripped into his favorite cup. In my hand was a small bottle of laxatives. Months of suspicious calls, late nights, and secret messages had slowly pushed me toward that moment. The final straw was the message I accidentally saw the night before from someone named Carolina telling him not to forget the perfume she liked.

I smiled calmly while handing him the coffee. He drank every drop without hesitation while talking about meetings and business plans that sounded emptier every time he spoke. Ten minutes after he left, I heard shouting outside and stepped onto the porch trying not to laugh. He was bent over beside the car in complete panic, clutching his stomach and demanding to know what I had given him. I acted innocent while he ran desperately toward the bathroom upstairs.

After the chaos finally started, I grabbed my purse, fixed my lipstick, and left to meet friends for drinks. For the first time in months, I felt strangely free. My phone kept buzzing with messages from my friends joking that I had finally taken control of my life again. Meanwhile, back at home, my husband was trapped in the bathroom while I sat laughing with people who reminded me I deserved better than constant lies and excuses.

Two hours later, I returned home expecting silence and maybe a miserable apology. Instead, I opened the front door and immediately froze. The entire house smelled like smoke. My stomach dropped as I rushed toward the kitchen. One of the candles I had forgotten near the curtains had tipped over while I was gone. Flames had already spread across part of the wall before someone managed to stop them.

Then I heard my husband’s voice behind me. Exhausted, pale, and wrapped in a blanket from the neighbors, he quietly explained that despite everything, he had managed to notice the smoke and call emergency services before the fire became uncontrollable. In one terrible moment, my petty revenge suddenly felt far less important than the realization that we had nearly lost everything.
